We have launched an aggressive home
ownership drive to place 300 first time homeowners into new homes
in Detroit communities. Our initiative is Detroit's Next 300. We
believe that the American dream of home ownership is possible for
many Detroit area residents without being swindled by high interest
rates and sub-prime mortgages.
Since 2003, Michigan Neighborhood
Partnership has provided home ownership counseling. This has led to unique
partnerships with local developers and housing organizations such as Habitat
for Humanity, Messiah Housing Corporation and the new Highland Park Collaborative.
In 2007, MNP expanded our services by hiring a staff of MSHDA certified
counselors who could better serve the needs of our clients.
The program recruits renters with
positive rental history and provides long-term assistance to prepare them
for homeownership. The MNP TEAM of HUD and MSHDA certified counselors work
hand and hand with the potential buyers to provide them with the best homebuyer
education possible. Our TEAM (which consist of home ownership advocates,
credit and home ownership counselors) is committed to serving our clients
until they complete the purchase and to offer consultation for two years
following their home purchase. This is a two-year outreach that incorporates
our IDA Program (Savings for Success) and other financial opportunities
available to potential homeowners in the Detroit area.
Whereby most
home counseling agencies use purchased materials for their educational
component, MNP developed its "Road To Success Homeownership Manual" following
a series of focus groups with consumers, trainers and financial institutions.
